New Years Eve

Another year coming to a close, another year starting. As we leave 2020 behind, I like to think we have all grown in different ways this year. We have seen the good and the bad of humans; we have experienced the lowest lows and the highest highs as a society. We have gotten through it all and we have learned from it all. I am looking forward to this new year with eagerness and  gratitude. I am focusing on what is important and what brings me joy.

As the clock strikes 12 tonight, lets take a deep breath and hope for the best; what is for us, will come and what isn't for us, will pass us by.

Happy New Years Eve friends!

See you in 2021!!

2020 in Numbers

This was quite the year. This blog one of my bright spots this year and I am so happy to have this slice of internet to share my life on.
I love numbers and data so like any other numbers nerd, I have gathered up my year in numbers.

I found this online last night and it made me laugh:

On a lighter and happier note,

Last year the Time Square Alliance, let you submit your wish for the new years and this was mine last year.

You can submit your wishes this year here.

I won't share this years wish, in hopes that it will come true. I can say, my wish from last year did come true, I did find happiness, good health and joyful moments this year- even amid the craziness.

Do you analyze your year in numbers? Did anything surprise you?

Dear December

Dear December,

Whew, you were a doozy. We have made it to level 12 of this year and I think that, in and of itself is quite the accomplishment, considering this whole year.

This month was ALOT in a weird mix of good and odd. I have been in my bookkeeping position for a year and it has been quite the learning curve. My to do lists this month seemed to never end. Some mornings, I went in early to get a head start and that wasn't enough some days. With a new investment contract coming up and getting things together for the new year, it was an extra busy month. I sure did learn a lot this whole year but especially this month.

My paddle board arrived early in the month and that was the best early Christmas gift, I bought myself. I have been stalking the Body Glove website since the summer and I waited until they had a super sale, which was before Thanksgiving and I bought it. Now since it has arrived, I am so excited for warmer weather to come.

We got our first 2 snowfalls this month, they weren't anything that accumulated but it was really nice to see snow, it felt like December finally.

One thing that really stood out for me this month was kindness. There were so many random acts of kindness that I witnessed, it really brightened the hard days. I was on both ends of the random acts of kindness- providing kindness to others and having kindness provided to me.  You really never know what someone is going through, you could really change their whole day around.

My anxiety was front and center this month, unfortunately. The middle of the month was pretty rough for me and I think everything just sorta hit me all together. The normal holiday stress, COVID and the pandemic fatigue, the anniversary of my grandma passing, normal pressure I put on myself, etc. I figuratively hit a wall and I re-evaluated what was going on, I took a deep breath and went to bed very early one night and I felt much better. Also crying seemed to help too.

I bounced back from that anxiety to a weekend full of finals and homework. I am never waiting to do the whole weeks homework and TESTS for the weekend especially at the end of the semester. The struggle was real and I got through it in about 5 hours. EEK! I was very happy to have the semester end and to find out that I got A's in both my classes. Wahhooo!

As Christmas approached, I was not that excited for it. It didn't feel like Christmas to me- it was missing something. My parents and I did try to get into the spirit by waiting for Santa to drive by in a Firetruck (Apparently this is a Jersey thing?!) and we drove around looking at Christmas Lights and we decorated for Christmas but something was missing.

We spent Christmas together and it was simple and perfect. I spend a lot of time with my parents in general, spending time with them on holidays seems special and my mom always knows how to make something extra special. My mom and I cooked together for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It was the perfect Christmas for us and I wouldn't have changed it for the world.

I am glad this month (and year) is ending on a high note. I am content with how this month went. I have started to get things set up for next year and I don't know about you but closing one year and starting off the year with a clean slate, I feel sets you up for goodness.

December, you were a lot but I am happy I got to experience it, ALL of it.

Gator Update: Fall Semester Completed

😍 Still swooning over this cute mascot🐊

Woah! Where did this semester go? Honestly, did anyone actually see this semester?

Welp! My first complete Fall semester is completed. You can read all about the first part of my semester in this post

As I went into my second semester, I knew what to expect with the class set up and how the Canvas program. We were given a fall break between the first eight weeks and the second eight weeks.  I hoped that these next two classes were not as homework-intensive because I felt in the 1st semester,  I was ALWAYS doing homework. (not that it was a bad thing, but it was A LOT more than normal.) I eagerly awaited for the syllabus to be released the Friday before classes started. Once I looked over the syllabus' and saw what was expected for these classes, I felt this semester was going to be a easier BUT I knew things are never as they seem.

Financial Accounting II

I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this class since we learned the basics in Accounting 1. I was actually pleasantly surprised that everything I learned in Financial Accounting I was applied in Financial Accounting II in real life scenarios. The basis of each week was to analyze a certain financial document of two companies, Target and Amazon, then write about our findings. I enjoyed this a lot; I enjoy being able to look at real documents and apply what I have learned. I realized some documents were easier to analyze than others, for me at least. I also enjoyed the discussions more than I had in Accounting 1. I think it was hearing how others analyzed the documents and their interpretation of it; I enjoyed reading how others thought and how we all overall came to the same conclusion.

There were two things I did not like- the grading and the final. The grading was weird; The discussion questions and responses were worth more than the actual chapter quizzes. I always found that the quizzes should be worth more than responses, but that is just me. The final took me 4 hours-FOUR HOURS! I understood what was being asked but it just took a lot of to compute and answer. I found it hard with the financial statements were not similar (ie. Target's year end was 01/31/xx while Amazon's year end was 12/31/xx) It made it hard, it hard when you had to compare numbers. I was terrified that I did not pass the final and ergo fail the class even though I had an A going into the final. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I got an 88 on the Final and still an A for the Final Grade for the semester. I was also pleasantly surprised to see my score on the Final was the median score for the class. I felt much better with my grades.

This class I definitely had to work at and really take my time during the critical thinking part. I really enjoyed that. I am looking forward to more accounting classes.

Personal Computer Applications

I was ambivalent about this class. It was a 100 level class and I've been using computers for a long time. The first two weeks were dry- talking about the very basics of computers and operating systems. Once we got into the lessons about Word, Excel, PowerPoint and  Access, things got a little more exciting. I enjoyed the lessons and how the explanations of the different aspects of each program. I did learn a few tips and tricks along the way.

This class overall was a nice way to end this semester- It was challenging but not overwhelming; it provided me with some great tips to use in everyday life. Did I wish some days, I could skip this class completely, yes but I am glad I took.

-------

This semester was perfect, it was just the right amount of work and challenges. I am excited to be done with my first fall semester and on to the Spring Semester. I am looking forward to my classes; in the first 8 weeks, it is Managerial Accounting and Interpersonal Communications and then in the second 8 weeks, its Payroll Accounting and Spreadsheet Concepts. I will check back in again in March for another Gator update.

Cards of Christmas Past

As I reflect on Christmas' past, all the memories flood my mind and make my heart sing. These memories are so near and dear to my heart.

There were Christmas' when I was a kid, where I was wrote a letter to Santa, leaving out cookies and milk for him, and carrots for his reindeer; spreading reindeer food on the front lawn making sure every single part of the lawn was covered to make sure he saw my house.  I remember sharing Christmas with my whole family- the aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws at someones house and the joy that there was love and family and  joy. There were Chrstimas' spent at home, sometimes with my grandma and aunt and parents; sometimes with just my parents. There were Christmas' that I received the gift I had been wanting all year; gifts I didn't know I wanted and some gifts that were total surprises. There was one Christmas, a boyfriend told me he loved me for the first time and there was that one time where I got stuck in the bathroom because I was so stressed, I slammed the door and it jammed. Every Christmas memory is forever in my memory- the good and the bad.

This year for Christmas, my parents continued our tradition of taking a special photo for our Christmas Card. While tomorrow I will reveal this year's card, today I am sharing past Christmas cards. We have been doing this tradition since 2011 and I am SO happy we have continued it for so long.

Christmas Movie Part 2

I totally get why Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movies have such a cult like following. Watching these Christmas movies is the equivalent to going to Disney World as a kid- its pure magic. The little towns are perfect, the leading actors are beautiful and there is ALWAYS a happy ending.

I took it upon myself and did some research. By research, I mean, I have been watching these movies since October and I found out some pretty interesting things. For one, there is ALWAYS hot cocoa somewhere and its usually on a cute date. Hallmark and Lifetime have also perfected the meet cute- the two lead characters ALWAYS have the most memorable and cutest first meeting. There is also always some cute holiday activity- ice skating, snowman building, snowball fights, outdoor Christmas market, decorating the tree (together) and the list goes on. Hallmark and Lifetime have perfected this down to a science- yes the science formula is used over and over and OVER again but hey! Why fix something that isn't broken?

These movies have definitely been one of the highlights of this season and I am so excited to share with you the movies I've watched. Here are my short and sweet notes:

Lifetime Movies

Christmas Unleashed - Vanessa Lachey plays the main character in this movie
Christmas Unwrapped "Let yourself believe in what you cannot see"
A Crafty Christmas Romance - Ugly sweater decorating date
Hometown Christmas - Stephen Colletti from Laguna Beach is the main characters love interest
Christmas on Ice - Mean Mayor cancels Christmas Carnival
Candy Cane Christmas- Lucy from 7th Heaven is the lead character
A Welcome Home Christmas *
A Christmas Wish - Ryan Caberra is the musical guest.
Christmas on Wheels - Classic car tradition
Christmas Hotel - Going home can help spark new ideas
Feliz NaviDAD- Mario Lopez is the main character
A Homemade Christmas- Christmas for Hire
Dear Christmas - Reminded me of Deliah (remember her, the soft spoken radio host?)
Too Close For Christmas-Chad Michael Murray
Christmas Ever After- Novelist finds the real life actor from the cover of her books
The Christmas Setup- Fran Drescher is the very loving (& loud) mother

Hallmark

Christmas Under Wraps - Northern Lights Picnic Date
Christmas at Pemberly Manor - a fun spin of Pride and Prejudice
Christmas at the Plaza - pure magic
Christmas with the Darlings - "You should do the right thing because its the right thing to do"
Christmas at Grand Valley -Danica McKeller
Merry and Bright -centers around a candy cane company
A Veterans Christmas *
Return to Christmas Creek- Fly by Santa
Christmas Connection - unaccompanied minor and meet cute
Christmas by Starlight - Adoption is intertwined throughout this story
The Christmas House - Christmas EVERYWHERE
Christmas Homecoming- Military themed
The Christmas Ring- antiques and journalism
Christmas in Rome -Italian Christmas
Christmas Waltz -Lacey Cherbert and finding what brings you joy
USS Christmas - Military themed
Christmas in Montana- "Its who you want to experience Christmas with that makes all the difference"
A Glenbrooke Christmas- The Christmas Bells
Once Upon a Christmas Miracle - True Story

*same plot line different networks (no I am not kidding)

I love seeing fun locations, actors who decided to jump back into acting after a long hiatus (Chad Michael Murray, Lucy from 7th Heaven, Lacey Chabert, Fran Drescher etc), the pure joy of the Christmas spirit. These movies can warm the coldest hearts and make you smile and forget about the craziness that 2020 actually is. I am so glad I let myself get lost in these movies this season.

If you want to create your own Hallmark Christmas Movie check out the Hallmark Movie Mad Lib or for a quicker result, see below.

I know you are all wondering, "Gab, you watched all these movies, which ones are your favorites?  Now picking favorites is like picking a favorite child, impossible to pick and someone's feelings is going to be hurt. BUT I am totally going to pick my top 10 favorites (in no particular order)(The first five are probably my VERY favorites)

  2. Hometown Christmas
  3. Christmas at the Plaza

  5. A Christmas Wish
  6. The Christmas Set Up

Christmas Movies Part 1

This holiday season has been great. I've been in the spirit since October and now we are just a few days away from CHRISTMAS, I cannot contain myself. I've rounded up my favorite (non-Hallmark) Christmas movies. Some of these are newer, some of these are classics and I love each one just the same. Are there any movies that I should put on my to-watch list? Let me know below.
The Night Before///How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Its a Wonderful Life/// The Santa Clause
Jingle All The Way///Miracle on 34th Street
Office Christmas Party///Love Actually
Home Alone///National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Elf///Noelle
The Star///White Christmas
I'll Be Home For Christmas///A Christmas Story

And apparently, Die Hard is a Christmas movie, which is totally debatable.... What do you think?

If I had to pick my favorite movie from each category, I would choose:

Category 1:The Santa Clause

Category 2:Office Christmas Party

Category 3: Elf (this was the hardest category to choose from)

Category 4: A Christmas Story

Check back tomorrow for more of my favorite Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas movies.
