2023 Book Reviews

This is a post I did not think I would be writing!

Going into 2023, I did not set a reading goal. I had quit reading in June of 2022 and I didn't think I would pick up any book in 2023. To my surprise, I felt an urge to read again in November.

For a very long time, I correlated reading to being sick; when I was in a season of bad flares with Crohn's Disease, reading would be the one thing that would bring me joy. SO now, when I am feeling well, reading is hard for me.

I was happy when I picked up a book and started to read again. This time when I was reading, I was pairing it with something good- the gym. I would go to the gym in the morning and walk on the treadmill for 40 minutes and read for those 40 minutes. It really was making me happy.

Without further ado, the moment you were eager to read about, I read THREE books! yay!

The Sorority Murder by Allison Brennan ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a great twisty, thriller suspense book. There were some parts that were really out there BUT I really enjoyed this.

Family of Liars by E. Lockhart ⭐⭐⭐

This is a prequel to We Were Liars, which I read back in 2016. Both books were odd, and I didn't have high hopes for this one. Its weird to me that the prequal came out 8 years after the original book. I guess that is what the author wanted.

Inside Threat by Matthew Quirk⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was my favorite book out of the three. It was also the longest one too. There were so many twists and turns and it kept me guessing to the very end. Even when it ended, I wanted more. I am not sure where I found this title, but I am sure glad I did.

WOW! There you have it, the books I read in the last two months of the year.

You can always stay on top of what I am reading, and what I am adding to my To Read List on Goodreads

Quarter 2 Book Reviews

YAY for second quarter book reviews. I struggled with these books. By the middle of May, I lost interest in reading and by the end of May, I decided to take a book break. I've read 18 books this year total and I think I had book fatigue. Does that happen to anyone else? So for the month of June, I didn't intentionally set out to read any books but one book I had on hold with Libby finally was available so I started to listen to that. I haven't gotten very far in it but I am, dare I say it, excited to listen? I guess you could say, I am slowly making my way through "Come As You Are" by Emily Nagoski, Ph.D.

I am still surprised that I am enjoying audiobooks so much. I like to listen to them at the gym and on long walks. These books were fun to listen to and the narrators were all really good. I've said it before and I will say it again, I love when Celebrities read their own books. I feel like it adds an extra something to it and its like having them right next to you while you listen.

On to the book:

You'll Be the Death of Me- Karen McManus ⭐⭐⭐⭐
There is just something about how Karen McManus writes that I have to read every single one of her books and I never get tired of her stories. I love the story lines and how they keep me guessing.  This one had a bunch of twists that I didn't see coming (and to Karen McManus' credit, I rarely see the twists coming and i LOVE that!)

Braving the Wilderness- Brene Brown⭐⭐⭐
I am not a fan of Brene Brown to start with and after reading/listening to this book, I am still not a fan (#Sorrynotsorry) BUT I will give it to her for this book. I really enjoyed it and I found myself shaking my head in agreement multiple times listening to it. She had some good points. And I liked that she read it herself; it felt more authentic. "Give yourself permission to be completely and uniquely you."

Dial A for Aunties- Jesse Q. Sutanto ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was such a random choice for me and I absolutely loved how wacky it was. Just when we got to a point of craziness, the Aunties came and just shocked me again. I can't wait to listen to the next book in this series.

Things are What You What Make of Them- Adam J. Kurtz⭐⭐⭐
This was the only physical book I read. I found it by accident, looking for another book. I totally judged this book by its cover and deemed it was interesting enough to borrow. It was a quick read full of little tidbits of advice. It was written for artists but I feel like the advice can be used for anyone.

Act Like You Got Some Sense- Jamie Foxx⭐⭐⭐⭐
I will continue to say it, celebrities who write books and then narrate their own books will always be my favorites. I learned a ton about Jamie Foxx listening to this. NO idea he had daughters and I had no idea about his life in general except that hes funny and sang "Blame it on the alcohol". This is a great listen. There were a bunch of times I actually laughed out loud. He provides some good parenting advice that can translate well into lives with no children too.

The School for Good Mothers- Jessamine Chan ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I was on the waiting list at the library for so long for this book. When I got the physical book, I found it hard to find time to sit down and read it. Libby saved the day by having the audio book ready and waiting for me. I really liked the narrator and the story was wacky but so so enthralling. My favorite part of it all? It was set in Philadelphia. I am slightly confused why its considered Science Fiction because it does not take place in space per say but there are space-like elements to it.

--------

Six books read this quarter. I was happy with the ones I found but more times than none, I found books I just couldn't finish during this time. I put those back into the "to read" pile and we will see if the mood strikes me to get back to them.

As always you can follow me on GoodReads to see what I am reading.

What are you currently reading?

First Quarter Book Reviews

Last year I fell back in love with reading. I read a total of FORTY SEVEN books! I don't know how that happened but I just kept finding new books that were so darn good! You can see what I read last year HERE.  My goal this year is to share the books I read quarterly. I think that makes it easier and puts less pressure on me sharing what I read. I do share what books I finish on my instagram (@wondergracejoy) with a rating; I save them in my highlights and also on Good Reads! You can find my Good read page HERE.

Okay, onto the books... I read 2 physical books, 2 digital books and listened to 8 audiobooks.

It felt so nice to actually hold a real book while reading. I missed this a lot and I am planning on hopefully reading more physical books. I got to visit two libraries- my main usual one and then a cute off the beaten path one that was just so adorable. It was so tiny and books were EVERYWHERE.

Libby has continued to be a rock star with the selection of books it has and the ease of choosing a new book cannot be beat. Libby is still my favorite pandemic find.

Okay, seriously, here are the books I read.

The 2 physical books were :

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse ⭐⭐⭐
Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke ⭐⭐⭐

Both of these books were unique. Several People typing was told completely in Slack Messages. I had no idea what slack messages were since my office does not use them. It was interesting, kinda weird to read but really good in the end. I liked the way it wrapped up. The Sanatorium was creepy and kept me guessing until the end. The whole story took place over a few days which was even more exciting. A bit slow in some parts but overall it was good!

The 2 digital books were:

The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking ⭐⭐⭐
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Again two very diverse and interesting books. The Little Book of Hygge has been on my to read list for a while and while it was interesting, it was a little boring for me. It provided some good tips and after reading, I realized The Little Book of Hygge is more of a manual for tips and tricks rather than a how to book. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of how to  sections and really interesting things but this is not to be read in order or as a normal book. The Maidens on the other hands was creepy and again, kept me guessing until the very end. I went into it not knowing much but I really ended up liking it.

The 8 audiobooks I read were:

A Palm Beach Wife by Susannah Marren⭐⭐⭐
Reputation by Sara Shepard⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Turnout by Megan Abbott⭐⭐⭐
His & Hers by Alice Feeney ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rouge Lawyer by John Grisham ⭐⭐
Hostage by Clare Mackintosh ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu ⭐⭐⭐
The Helpline by Katherine Collette⭐⭐

There were three books I really enjoyed listening to: Reputation, His & Hers and Hostage. I thought the narrator(s) did a great job with these three and I think I would not have lived them as much as I did if I read it instead of listened to it. I realized that I particularly like when audiobooks have more than one narrator- it helps with the authenticity of the story in my mind. In His & Hers, there were three narrators, His voice, Her voice and the Killers' voice. It just made more a more interesting read. There were two books I just didn't love listening to: Rouge Lawyer and The Helpline. Rouge Lawyer ended up being a collection of short stories with the Rouge Lawyer being in all of them. Eh, it was not my favorite and for one of my first John Grishman books,  I am not sure I would want to read anything else by him. The others were good, nothing bad, nothing great, just good entertaining books to listen to.

I was pleased with my reads for the first quarter of this year. Currently, I have been in a book rut since the beginning of the month after finishing The Helpline. This happens when I read so much in such a short amount of time, then I don't want to took another book for a while AND THAT'S OKAY! I am giving myself grace and easing myself back into reading.

What are you reading? I am always looking for great book suggestions.
