Dear March

 Dear March,

Hello.... I have a quick question for you before we jump into this letter.... What was that?! This month, was full of ups and downs and days where I thought to myself, What in the world is going on!? BUT through all that, I am here on March 31st, saying I made it through. I might have cried, I might have fought and I might have struggled but I made it and boy I am sure glad I did make it.

On to the overview of my March:

-    Watched a lot of movies- both old and new
-    Climbed a lot of walls
-    Sweet surprises
-    A favorite flamingo got to go on an adventure
-    A wide variety of emotions were felt this month
-    Eleanor turned 4!
-    Adventures
-    Daily coffees? (who am I?)

This was a full FULL month. Looking back through my planner (which is also acts like my journal), I didn't realize how much I truly experienced this month. There were big moments, small moments, moments I would like to forget, moments I was really proud of myself and moments that were just everyday run of the mill moments but all these moments made for a pretty good month overall.

One of my favorite memories from this month was Penelope's Alaskan Adventure. Kyle went on a business trip to Alaska and I gave him (baby) Penelope. I honestly thought he would leave her home but he brought her along and then provided me photos of her in Alaska (and Seattle!) making new friends! That brought so much joy to me and I could tell he totally understood my goofy side! Check out Penelope at the airport wondering why she can't just fly herself to Alaska. (BTW, she loved the flights and she always got extra attention from all the crew!)

In case you are wondering, Penelope is currently living in Kyle's work bag to be ready at a moments notice to go on the next adventure.  Don't worry, she has plenty of snacks, water and her flamingo passport.

Another great moment this moment this month was getting to spend more time outside. We had some more unseasonably warm days and I took full advantage. 6 walks on my lunch and then one golden hour bike ride around my neighborhood made my heart feel so full! I am so so excited to get outside even more in April.

On the flip side of all the good moments, I felt a lot of BIG emotions this month. When something was off, I didn't brush it off, I tried to feel whatever it was fully and that resulted in some pretty big emotions. I sometimes had a hard time controlling them and it got messy. There were a few days were my anxiety got the best of me and I felt as if the walls were closing in on me. Even though, I have the tools to work through this anxiety (thanks therapy), I completely forget it when I am in the moment.

I think what was really interesting was how deeply I connected with the new Pixar movie, Turning Red. There were so many moments watching it, where I said to myself, OH MY GOSH! I know exactly how you feel Mei! Her quirkiness and her absolute self love was so refreshing and perfect. I wasn't expecting to get so attached to this movie especially since I really haven't loved a lot of Pixar movies in the last few years. Turning Red made me realize that I cannot let things get so bottled up and then POOF! next minute, I am a giant panda bear and super embarrassed. I need to let those emotions out and speak up or in the wise words of Taylor Swift... Speak now.

Eleanor turned 4 this month and hit 40,000 miles. WAHOO! She is in her last year of being a toddler. I cannot believe I've had Eleanor for 4 years! We have been on so many adventures. I am so glad she has stuck around this long.

A huge highlight of my month was all the climbing I did! Below are my climbing stats for the month and overall I am pretty happy with the progress I made. I always leave the gym with messy hair, covered in chalk and smiling (and sometimes frustrated). One exciting point, since I have been going to Gravity Vault so often, it made sense to buy a year membership. I am happy to say, I got my money's worth for March using it 4 times. (I bought the membership towards the end of the month)

I climbed  9  times at 2 climbing gyms.
I averaged  14  routes per session at the Gravity Vault in Brick
I averaged  7  routes per session at the Gravity Vault in Middletown.

Gravity Vault Brick

I completed  18  different bouldering routes (VB- V1)
I completed  0  different top rope routes

Most Rewarding: V1 Grey- this was my project. I had been struggling on this one since JANUARY! I spent the whole month working on it in parts and it felt so good when I was able to complete it fully.

Most Challenging: V1 Purple(s)- these were two new routes that I tried and they were challenging. Both had holds that weren't the big smooth holds I was used to; these holds were super textured and crimpy. I have avoided crimps (very tiny holding space, usually only the first or second knuckle can hold it) since the beginning and well, I guess I have to now face them. It will be a humbling challenge.

Favorite Route: V1 Grey just because it was my project and I was so proud of it.

Gravity Vault Middletown

I completed  16  different bouldering routes (V0- V2)
I completed  0  different top rope routes

Most Rewarding: V0 Blue- it was on an overhang and the last foothold always was slippery. I found strength holding on and being able to complete the route.

Most Challenging: V0 Pink-  I couldn't get my head wrapped around how to reach around the volume which was to the left of the volume and move my body that way. I got it once but I fought the entire way. This is my current project in Middletown.

Favorite Route: V1 Red- This went across and then up; I worked hard on my footwork and trusting my hands to hold me while I reached.

Favorite Moment at both gyms: feeling more confident to try different routes and being calmer if I get stuck towards the top. Also I made friends!

Whew! Its nice to go back and see the progress you make!

My gym stats for the month are:

I went to the gym 2  times.
I completed 13  exercises per session.
I did 26  different exercises
These two times I went to the gym, I did all my favorite exercises. I love seeing the progress with the gym and seeing how much strength I have gained.

My mini goal for next month is to get to the gym more and continue to see my progress with my strength.

License Plate Game

This is a silly but joyful update. I saw   new license plates this month. I couldn't believe my luck.
My trip to Ikea on the turnpike really helped me this month. I have only 13 more to go!

Wonder what I should do after I find them all....

What a wonderfully crazy month I had.
I am looking forward to:
-More consistently warmer days to spend outside
-focusing more on my passion projects and diving deeper into what makes me, me.

PS! As I was drinking into work on Monday (April 4), I totally realized I forgot to talk about one thing that made me smile and totally surprised me and that I totally mentioned in my month overview.

I started drinking coffee. I know this isn't ground breaking news and 90% of the population drink it but I was in the 10% of the population that didn't drink it. (I always thought I was naturally perky enough) but a few weeks ago, when I was at Starbucks getting my Medicine Ball, I had this urge to get a small Americano. I walked out of there ($8 later) with two white coffee cups in my hands. I drank both once I got to work and I was in love again. I drank Amerciano's years ago and then randomly stopped (probably because the price). I started getting them regularly after this. I wasn't upset about the price because I had a gift card. I started thinking that Americano's have to be easy to make- its just 1 part espresso and 2 parts water.

I went on a search in Stop and Shop for Espresso.  I had no idea what espresso looked like other to find it in the coffee isle. After a few minutes, I found it. The tiniest little jar of coffee on the shelf, all by it self. I was so excited! I got even more excited that one little jar cost me just about the same as one small cup at Starbucks. I figured this would be well worth the money.  I will report back in Dear April to let you know how it sizes up to Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts Americano's.

Midweek Thoughts

Woah, hello!

Here is another gathering of my random thoughts I am having midweek.

[[Also, if anyone knows how to fix a Chromebook that is squeaking while plugged into the charger, please contact me ASAP. I am pretty sure my Chromebook is dying a slow death.]]

St. Peters College in the Sweet Sixteen//// YAY JERSEY!! YAY for being the Cinderella story. Even though I am from Jersey, I had to look up where St. Peter's College was. I love the one tweet that read "St. Peter's does not have a single player on the roaster that was ranked coming out of high school" How cool is that? This was the first year in a while I haven't made a bracket, but knowing my track record, my bracket would have been broken very quickly! I can't wait to see them play again on Friday night!

Spring is Here/// Yay! Spring is finally here! I am here for the warmer weather, longer days and the generally good vibes that spring brings. I am NOT here for this super early allergy season. That can move on very quickly- no one (and I have spoken to A LOT of people) wants this weird early allergy season to say.

Turning Red/// OMG! If you have Disney+, go watch Turning Red.... I'll wait. Okay, Did you watch it in amazement? YES?! okay! This movie pulled at so many heartstrings for me, I can't deny that Disney knows how to tell a good story. The fact that Mei and her friends are messy and so real made me love this movie even more. AND THE DETAILS! The insulin pump patch on the little girl! The comment about it being so fluffy! (a la Despicable Me) Bart & Lisa the Dragons! The hair! The small tiny details that I ate up! The Easter eggs hidden! GAH!  Now I want to go watch it again.

Lastly...

Best ideas always come in the shower/// This happens to me routinely and I never have a pad and pencil and my phone is just always out of reach and when i write it on the shower curtain in the steam, it always goes away before I get out of the shower.  I usually focus on repeating said best idea in my mind until I get out of the shower and run to my phone to type out. Hasn't someone made a waterproof notepad/ dry erase board yet for the shower?

Random thoughts huh?! Hope your last full week of March is going by swimmingly. Here's to warmer, more consistent weather and all the good vibes we all so desperately need.

First Quarter Book Reviews

Last year I fell back in love with reading. I read a total of FORTY SEVEN books! I don't know how that happened but I just kept finding new books that were so darn good! You can see what I read last year HERE.  My goal this year is to share the books I read quarterly. I think that makes it easier and puts less pressure on me sharing what I read. I do share what books I finish on my instagram (@wondergracejoy) with a rating; I save them in my highlights and also on Good Reads! You can find my Good read page HERE.

Okay, onto the books... I read 2 physical books, 2 digital books and listened to 8 audiobooks.

It felt so nice to actually hold a real book while reading. I missed this a lot and I am planning on hopefully reading more physical books. I got to visit two libraries- my main usual one and then a cute off the beaten path one that was just so adorable. It was so tiny and books were EVERYWHERE.

Libby has continued to be a rock star with the selection of books it has and the ease of choosing a new book cannot be beat. Libby is still my favorite pandemic find.

Okay, seriously, here are the books I read.

The 2 physical books were :

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse ⭐⭐⭐
Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke ⭐⭐⭐

Both of these books were unique. Several People typing was told completely in Slack Messages. I had no idea what slack messages were since my office does not use them. It was interesting, kinda weird to read but really good in the end. I liked the way it wrapped up. The Sanatorium was creepy and kept me guessing until the end. The whole story took place over a few days which was even more exciting. A bit slow in some parts but overall it was good!

The 2 digital books were:

The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking ⭐⭐⭐
The Maidens by Alex Michaelides ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Again two very diverse and interesting books. The Little Book of Hygge has been on my to read list for a while and while it was interesting, it was a little boring for me. It provided some good tips and after reading, I realized The Little Book of Hygge is more of a manual for tips and tricks rather than a how to book. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of how to  sections and really interesting things but this is not to be read in order or as a normal book. The Maidens on the other hands was creepy and again, kept me guessing until the very end. I went into it not knowing much but I really ended up liking it.

The 8 audiobooks I read were:

A Palm Beach Wife by Susannah Marren⭐⭐⭐
Reputation by Sara Shepard⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Turnout by Megan Abbott⭐⭐⭐
His & Hers by Alice Feeney ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rouge Lawyer by John Grisham ⭐⭐
Hostage by Clare Mackintosh ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu ⭐⭐⭐
The Helpline by Katherine Collette⭐⭐

There were three books I really enjoyed listening to: Reputation, His & Hers and Hostage. I thought the narrator(s) did a great job with these three and I think I would not have lived them as much as I did if I read it instead of listened to it. I realized that I particularly like when audiobooks have more than one narrator- it helps with the authenticity of the story in my mind. In His & Hers, there were three narrators, His voice, Her voice and the Killers' voice. It just made more a more interesting read. There were two books I just didn't love listening to: Rouge Lawyer and The Helpline. Rouge Lawyer ended up being a collection of short stories with the Rouge Lawyer being in all of them. Eh, it was not my favorite and for one of my first John Grishman books,  I am not sure I would want to read anything else by him. The others were good, nothing bad, nothing great, just good entertaining books to listen to.

I was pleased with my reads for the first quarter of this year. Currently, I have been in a book rut since the beginning of the month after finishing The Helpline. This happens when I read so much in such a short amount of time, then I don't want to took another book for a while AND THAT'S OKAY! I am giving myself grace and easing myself back into reading.

What are you reading? I am always looking for great book suggestions.

Happy Spring

We made it! We made it through the long and very cold winter. I know we are just in the middle of March and a snowstorm could happen (I really hope it doesn't) but I am hopeful that warmish weather is here to stay.

Questions For Humans: The Series

Back again for another Question for Humans. I LOVE the question I chose this month.  Lets get right into it.

This month's question is:

Isn't this a great question?!

My answer:
Picture: 9th grade English class. I was clearly misplaced in this class- I had never been in classes with any of these people before and I am pretty sure there was a 10th grader in this class too. Mr. Hickman was the teacher and he was awesome. He was much older than the other teachers but that made him even cooler. He was so passionate about teaching and what we were reading. He clearly realized that I was misplaced in the class and he would always tell me in the middle of the craziness

"You're an isle of calm in a sea of despair"

He wrote this in my senior year book- 4 years later, he still remembered. I was confused by this initially but years later, I realized this was a really really sincere compliment. Mr. Hickman said even in the midst of chaos, you were calm and a place to focus on.

Snapshot from my senior year book

These words have stayed with me my all through my life and I think about it often now that I am in my 30's. Thank you Mr. Hickman.

What's something you'll never forget?
