Rock the Climb: 1 Year of Bouldering

If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know I rock climb, specifically boulder. This has been such an unexpected joy this past year. I had only a few experiences with rock climbing previously; A few times on the boardwalk and probably a birthday parties when I was younger. In 2018, I went to Middletown Gravity Vault with an old boyfriend. A co-worker had previously gone and she spoke highly of this and it sounded like a lot of fun. We went and first tried bouldering and we couldn’t figure it out (we walked in like we knew what we were doing) and then admitted we never did this before and  tried the instructor led belay. I ended up loving it but it wasn’t until 2021 I had the opportunity again to try it out.

Kyle and I went rock climbing on our 2nd date. Kyle has been climbing his whole life and I thought this would be a fun way to try something new. I was really excited about this; we did the instructor led belay. An hour later, I was covered in chalk, my hair was a mess and I had the biggest smile on my face. The next day I was SO SORE to the point of not being able to lift my arms, it was BAD! Clearly, I needed to work on my form. All I kept thinking about was trying it again. I hadn’t experienced something like that in a long time.

Later that year, Kyle and I really got back into rock climbing. We would top rope and boulder. Top rope was a little easier for me because I knew I had the rope as a safety net and if I needed to I could come down easily at any point. Bouldering on the other hand was REALLY hard for me; there was a lot to adjust to- the height, trusting myself to hold myself up and to figure out how to get the top then back down…safely. It was A LOT to think about while bouldering. At the end of each climbing session, I might have been covered in chalk, had fallen more times than I could count, knew I had bruises all of my legs BUT I always had the biggest smile on my face. I always left in awe because I did something that I didn’t think I could ever do.

Now, after a year of climbing, I feel confident in my ability to be able to hold myself up on the wall; I am confident with my ability to look at a route and visualize how I am going to get up that route. I can also observe others who complete the route I’ve been working on and see how they complete it. I have gained confidence, strength, and knowledge in a sport where I knew relatively nothing about.  Each time I go climbing, I continue to learn something new, attempt a new hold and take the time to really enjoy the experience.

One thing I didn't expect when I first started was how KIND, ACCEPTING and HELPFUL climbers were. You can always strike up a conversation with someone and they will almost always talk to you especially if its about what they just climbed. They are willing to share their knowledge with you (sometimes even when you don't ask) and they are welcoming. There have been times I would be a the gym by myself and I would strike up a conversation with someone and we would climb and talk for the duration of the time I was there. There was never a point when I felt like I was a bother or annoying them.

I have learned a lot over this past year, these thing definitely apply to bouldering but they can also be applicable in everyday life too:

Slow and Steady/// Your first instinct is going to zoom up the wall and then zoom back the wall. Going slow up the wall will allow you to think and focus on what you are doing and where you are going.

Think/// The climbing gym I go to follows the mono colored routes, each route follows one color, and the starting hold and ending hold are clearly marked by the same color taped. Before jumping on the wall, you will need to look at what the holds are, where you are going and where it ends.

Observe Others/// One of the things I found really helpful is when you are resting, watch other climbers especially if they are trying/completing the route you are working on. Sometimes they have a different approach, or they are able to work through a problem and give you an idea how to solve it.

Try/// You showed up to the climbing gym, why not try. Even if you know that you might fall, go for it. You are not penalized for trying, no one is going to judge you and this tough route might become your next project. Sometimes I will see a higher graded route that I am used to but I will attempt it even though I might not be able to complete it.

Positive Mindset/// This comes natural for me but going into something new, you will have a better experience even if

Falling/// This is inevitable. You might not grab onto a hold that you feel secure on or you might mis-grab a hold or you just might slip. Luckily, with indoor bouldering the floor is padded. Sometimes you climb up and you get to a point where you can’t go anymore and climbing down doesn’t seem to be an option (climbing down is always the safest option if available.)

Control Breathing/// This took me a long time to understand. If your breath is controlled, you are more that likely able to think through what you are doing and not panic. If you are calm, it makes things much easier.

Visualizing/// I am still working on this one. When you find a route you want to climb, especially a new one, try to visualize how you are going to go up this route. What hand is going, on what hold and the same for your foot. Sometimes it doesn’t work, you just have to figure it out on the wall but in some routes, its helpful to plan it out.

Trust Yourself/// When you are bouldering, you are going to be in situations where you will be hanging on by one arm or on a hold you don’t really feel super secure on. You have to trust your ability and your skills (which is hard as a beginner), you might actually surprise yourself.

Take Breaks/// You might be tempted to go, go, go BUT its actually beneficial to take breaks especially after a particularly trying route. When you are taking a break, stretch, hydrate and observe others.  These breaks are beneficial for your hands, giving them a break.

Observe Progress/// Its nice to always look forward but sometimes looking back to see how far you have come. Taking photos, and videos to look back on and to see how far you’ve come. Its always interesting to see

Keep A Record/// if you go to the same climbing gym  and you go often, it's nice to keep track of what you climb and if you are working on a project,  take notes of what you did or what to try next time.

Cross-train/// climbing works a specific group of muscles to make sure you are keeping the other muscle groups are not neglected, weight training and cardio are my favorite.

One thing I learned very quickly with bouldering is that there is a whole new set of lingo that I needed to learn.  I was so confused at first when I heard other climbers talking about beta and jugs. Here are some basic terms you should know before getting into bouldering:

Beta:        Advice on how to climb a problem- usually the easiest way
Campus:     Climbing using only your hands
Crimp:    The smallest hold using your fingertips
Crux:     Hardest part of the problem
Dyno:    Jumping from one hold to another on the same problem
Flag:    Sticking you leg out to counter balance yourself
Flash:    Climb and complete the problem on the first try
Jug:    Large hold that can be held onto comfortably
Match:    Placing both hands on a hold; usually an ending move
Pinch:    Holding on only by your thumb and fingers.
Problem:    Route
Project:    A work in progress problem
Send:    To climb without falling
Traverse:    Moving laterally on the wall

Now you have some tips, you know some lingo next up you will need some gear. Bouldering is one of those sports that you really don't need that much gear.

Shoes/// These are the most important piece of gear. If you are new, the climbing gym has shoes to rent and after you have decided to really pursue climbing, you can look into purchasing your own. There are many different kinds.

Chalk/// This will help you grip the holds better. Again the climbing gyms have chalk to rent but I ended up buying my own chalk and chalk bag very early on. I like how you can customize your chalk bag to show your personality.

Brush/// This is something that climbing gyms normally have for you to use. These are used to brush the excessive chalk off of a hold. (Too much chalk can be a hindrance)

That's it! See I wasn't joking when I said you don't need a lot of gear.

Now you got the gear,  you are ready to go but where do you go? Climbing gyms! Outside! As a beginner I would start at a rock climbing gym. You can get use to things first before venturing outside. Going to a climbing gym also provides you a variety of routes. I personally have only gone to climbing gyms and I am  not looking to go bouldering outside any time soon.

I personally go to Gravity Vaults. New Jersey has a few different climbing gym chains that can provide variety of how routes/problems are set and provides you a different experience.

So... why have I stuck with Bouldering?

What a great question, thanks for asking! I love bouldering simply because it shows me that I can do hard things. I love being able to approach a problem, set out to complete it and then complete it and get my butt back down the wall. I am consistently surprised by what I can do. I know this is something I can continually work at and get better. I love that.

I have found some great articles about climbing:

My story of bouldering and some helpful tips and tricks is incomplete because its continually being written and I couldn't be happier. Because its still being written, it means I am still continue to learn and advance. I can't wait to see where I am a year from now, things can only go up, expect when you fall.

Are you considering trying bouldering? Do you have any other questions? Let me know in the comments below!

RUNtember Challenge

After my 5K back in August, I started thinking I wanted to start running more. I spent the week between the 5K and the beginning of September thinking how I can accomplish that. I came up with the RUNtember Challenge for myself.

RUNtember is a month of running (at least) one mile every single day. Simple as that.
To make sure I stuck with this, I made a story on Instagram announcing my challenge AND to keep me accountable. I knew if I hold myself accountable to someone, anyone, I would complete this challenge.

The beginning of the month was easy to get my runs in, in the morning. It was light out pretty early and it was pretty warm out still. As the month wore on, it started getting lighter out later and it was starting to get colder. THEN the news about Eliza Fletcher being kidnapped and subsequently murdered spread throughout the news outlets and that spooked me. I started thinking about my outdoor runs and I started thinking more seriously about joining a gym.

Towards the end of the month, I started 'gym-shopping' and I landed at Retro Fitness. Their early hours, and distance from my house made it an easy decision. I had no idea what to expect going to the gym at 5:15 AM. Was I going to be the only one there?! HECK NO! I was shocked to see how many other people were there! I really enjoyed seeing the same people there everyday.

Running on the treadmill took a few days to get used to. When I run outside, my pace was all over the place. On a treadmill, it was more even which I was not used to at all. I had to figure out what speed I was comfortable running at. After a few times, I fell into a nice rhythm to run at. It wasn't super challenging but it also wasn't super easy. A 10:54 pace seemed to fit me really well.

As the month was coming to an end, I upped the distance I was running to 2 miles. I felt that was a good transition after running a mile for 23 out of the 30 days. I ran two miles for 6 days and I had the one day of a 4 mile (3 treadmill miles). I was really happy with how my running has progressed. It seemed that I had found my pace and found joy in running.

Towards the end of the month, I started thinking about doing another 5K. There is a Santa 5K in Asbury Park and a Jingle Bell run in Downtown Toms River. I want to spend the next two months, steadily increasing my miles and getting more comfortable at my pace too. I would like to get some more outdoor runs in, to get used to running in colder weather. Am I looking to place in these 5K's heck no! My biggest goal is to have fun, dress up and enjoy running (AND eating all the pasta afterwards!)

I knew that running every single day was not something sustainable that I could continue past a month. I also knew I should be incorporating strength training into my workout too. I am hoping now that I have a gym membership, it will be easier to do that.

My stats for the month ended up being as follows:

I am really proud of these miles. Those almost 7 hours that I spent running brought me an unexpected joy and helped me create health habits.

Since I like to keep track the old fashion way, using pen and paper, I kept a calendar of my month running.  Every week I averaged the pace and totaled the miles ran. At the end of the month I did a final average pace and a grand total of miles.  While my Nike Run App gave me the same data, it was nice to see it laid out in one place in front of me.

Something that I found out that I love while I run is podcasts. When I was starting the Couch to 5K program, I was having a really hard time finding music that I could run to without running too fast or not running quick enough ( in my mind).  One day I decided to pick a podcast that I had saved a while ago. I had no expectations if this would be beneficial or not but after my first run listening to a podcast, I was hooked. THIS was exactly what I needed. There was no tempo to keep up with and I got to learn/think about something- it was getting two birds with one stone.SCORE! I have listened to dozens of podcasts of the past few months and I get so excited now when I find a new podcast. My trick for choosing podcasts is, picking a podcast that is approximately the same amount of time I plan to run for. That way, when the podcast is done, I'm done!

I am looking forward to running more and seeing what else comes out of this crazy adventure.

Namaste not in bed- Yoga for all.

Last night I had my private yoga class and that was the inspiration behind this post. So many people want to try yoga but they are afraid because it looks too hard.Looks can be deceiving sometimes and I hope my guide of the 6 W's and 1 H (who, what, where, wear, why, when and how) of Yoga can help you feel more at ease with trying yoga.

WHO can do yoga?
Anyone! I recommend yoga to each and every person I meet. It is so beneficial to your body mind connection.
I practice yoga because I needed a way to relax. Really- I did not know how to fully relax before yoga. Yoga has so many benefits to your mind and body. I have been dealing with a lot of digestive issues recently and my instructor, Adrienne tries to tell us the connection when we are in a pose to what this pose is helping. I always feel so refreshed and relaxed after a class.

WHAT is yoga?
Yoga is a system of exercises for mental and physical health and a Hindu philosophy that teaches a person to experience inner peace by controlling the body and mind (source)
My definition of yoga is a being centered, both in mind and body, relaxed and ready to fully accept where this practice will take you.
WHERE can you practice yoga?
Anywhere! That is the absolutely best thing about it. There are yoga studios, gyms, and your personal home.
I personally have tried a lot of different yoga classes before I fell in love with the current classes I am taking now. I have been taking a class at clubhouse in the senior development in town. Adrienne comes in once a week for an hour class (and also does other classes besides yoga here too) and I absolutely love this class. Most of these women live in the senior community and there are a few (like myself) who are not from the community. This class has about 10 people at max and the instructor has a calming presence and a soothing voice. I have also been having private yoga sessions at my instructor’s home studio once a week, since I have been sick. It’s a nice way to end a crazy week.
I tend to like the smaller, more personalized classes (think less than 10 people) so I can get the added benefit of the extra attention.
One of my favorite yoga classes (besides the ones I am currently taking) I took was at a high-end fitness club (on a date!). This will forever be a favorite of mine because the class was candlelight yoga. It was not only beautiful but I remember meditating for at least a half hour- it was amazing. I never thought I would pay to lay on the floor to meditate! I felt totally relaxed and as if nothing could bother me.

WHEN can you do this?
Anytime! Before work, before bed, after work, at night…. Anytime you can fit it into your schedule.
As of recently, I have been practicing yoga, once a week for an hour. I sometimes mediate or try a few poses when I am home on the days I am not going to yoga.

WHY I started practicing yoga?
After my whole debacle with my appendix, I needed to build some muscle and start to regain my strength back. I started going back to the gym, but I always felt discouraged that I wasn’t back to my old self. My mom suggested I signup for a yoga class since I always loved it but never found an instructor I loved.
My parents went to an open house around the corner from our home and ended up being the only people there. They started talking to realtor and found out she has a personal studio and teaches yoga. (((the stars aligned that day))) I was able to take a complimentary class to see if I liked her style. I fell in love that night especially when we did meditation and she read a script that dealt with Picasso's Blue Period. (The script can be found in THIS book)
Especially now since I was sick again, I have been utilizing yoga to become more centered and more relaxed. I am more mindful of my thoughts and how I feel. I am more in tune with my body and feel more at peace with myself.

HOW can you start?
Google 'yoga studios' in your area, look for local instructors and ask your friends. Today is the best time to start something new. Research, try different types of classes and see what is the best fit for you.
You do not have to know all the poses and the lingo to start- you will gradually pick it up. Your instructor will not expect everyone in the class to know everything- take the time in the beginning of the class to introduce yourself to the instructor and let them know you are a beginner. There is no shame in admitting that. Even the best yogi's started somewhere as a beginner. If your nervous, grab a friend and try out a class together!

What do you WEAR?
I personally use my yoga capris (most of the time) for yoga. I like to wear loose fitting tops and yoga capris or pants. I do not like to be constricted when I am trying flipped dog or crow poses.
I find the cutest yoga clothes at T.J. Maxx! They have such cute patterned pants ( I am still trying to get into this trend of bright colorful pants!) and adorable tops. You can see two great options below for yoga!

Partner Tree pose with Adrienne

I can't finish a post about yoga without giving a shout-out to my awesome instructor, Adrienne! She has such a passion for personal training and yoga. If you are around my area someday, be sure to check her out and see the passion for yourself. (She is an amazing photographer too!)

Go on with 'Yogi'-selves and try yoga- You never know what amazing things you can accomplish without trying.

Saturday's make me smile

Today was a good day. I felt so much better, my stomach felt so much better and I even went to the gym for 50 minutes and did cardio!

Lately I have been obsessed with playing Angry Birds on my iPhone. I downloaded Free Angry Birds, Angry Birds Lite, Angry Birds Rio and Angry Birds Seasons to start out with. I got 3 stars on each level in each game (except in Angry Birds Seasons- Christmas Level 2 and 3- They are really really hard!!!!!!) After I conquered all those levels I finally spent the 99 cents and purchased the paid Angry Birds and I have 3 stars in Level 1 and half of Level 2 in Poached Eggs. I was never a video game kind of kid but now that I am 23 years old I cannot stop playing this game!

Tonight is the Lockup Marathon on MSNBC and I am so excited. My parents do not understand why I love to watch this show. Its about Jail. And my parents cannot fathom why I watch Cops and Jail so much either.

Tomorrow I hope to head to Target and the Mall to celebrate that I am finally feeling better. I really do not need anything but I do need new black tshirts  for my retail job (we have to wear all black and black doesn't wash that well unless you wash it in Woollite specially made for darker clothing.)
I do have a merchandise credit at Forever 21 because I returned a retro romper that I bought that I thought looked good on in the store but not so good at home. Of course they do not give refunds so I had to get either a merchandise credit or exchange it for something. I really didn't find anything that I wanted/needed right then and there so I opted for the credit.
There is a new store- Francesca's which I have been in and gave it a quick look through but never really had time to stop and really look in there..

Oh boy, another day, another lesson learned, another moment to cherish has passed.

i do now recall the smell of the rain
fresh on the pavement, i ran off the plane
that July 9th the beat of your heart
it jumps through your shirt, i still feel your arms
